Spirit Of Lindy has invited 4 international couples with different styles, of their own ; these couples became references in dancing & teaching Balboa ; You should be breathless, for sure !

Nick WILLIAMS & Denise PAULINO (L.A., USA)

Nick & Denise teamed up as dance partners in May, 2002. They have been intrumental in bringing all the diverse Swing dance styles to the nation.Denise Paulino has been swing dancing since 1989. She began teaching in 1993. She studied with the originators of the swing dances, and is constantly searching for different styles that compose all aspects of Swing. Denise is not only the current Balboa Sweetheart, but is also one of the many people who brought Dean Collins' style of dance to light, creating a domino effect throughout the Southern California dance scene.

Denise's style and trademark swivels are influential to many female dancers nationwide. Many of her students have become dance champions and gone on to prosperous teaching careers. As an accomplished dancer, Miss Paulino has placed in several local and national contests. She is a two time winner of the Jitterbug Ball (2000 and 2001), the National Jitterbug Championships - Balboa Division (2001 and 2003) and the California Balboa/Bal-Swing Championships (2002 and 2003).

Nick Williams has embodied the traditionalist style of swing dancing since 1998. He is known for his "fast and fancy" footwork. His understanding of Lindy Hop, Collegiate Shag, and Balboa come from learning from the original masters. His accomplishments thus far include: 2001 Jitterbug Jam, 2002 and 2003 National Jitterbug Championships, and the 2003 American Lindy Hop Championships. His inspiration for the dances comes from a desire for accurate authentication, and can be seen in his great lines, general presence and command on the dance floor. Above all, he exhibits musicality, creativity, and continuity. Nick is a true leader for the next generation of swing dancers, as well as an accomplished choreographer. He is also co-founder of The Rhythm Rollers. (extract of their site).

Erik ROBISON & Sylvia SKYLAR (L.A., USA)

Erik Robison and Sylvia Skylar began dancing together in April of 1997. Their similar interest in reviving the earlier forms of swing dance was the driving force behind their wholehearted investigation into the more traditional swing dances, such as Partnered Charleston, Collegiate Shag, and the Balboa, as well as the more common dance of the 6 and 8 count Lindy Hop. They studied hours of old movies, soundies, and vitaphone shorts and actually had the opportunity to learn first-hand from many of the original dancers from these clips.
The more they studied, they realized that there was an entire style of Lindy Hop which seemed to be lost in the modern Lindy movement. It was the style that belonged to the swing dancers from Southern California and more specifically, Hollywood, during the 1930's and the 1940's.

Erik and Sylvia fell in love with the style and dedicated themselves completely to its revival. Erik and Sylvia named and trademarked their rendition of this authentic Lindy Hop style "Hollywood Style". Hollywood style refers not to the geographic area of origin, but to the medium from which they learned, old Hollywood and its dancers.

Erik and Sylvia's mutual interest in authentic swing dance, and a passion for vintage attire, has sparked a partnership and a reputation that has taken them all across the United States, and abroad, as performers and instructors. They teach regularly at the world famous Derby in Hollywood, and do extensive private instruction and weekend workshops. At the American Lindy Hop Championships, they won first place in the Showcase Division.

Their engagements at annual swing camps include Whitsun Tide Camp (Germany), Camp Hollywood, The Battle of the Big Bands (D.C.), Monsters of Swing (Ventura, CA), Jitterbug Jam (Westlake Village, CA), San Francisco Swing Jam, The Virginia State Open, and frequent other invitations.

With a purposely traditional, authentic "look", Erik and Sylvia have done photo shoots for Bugle Boy, Vanity Fair with Leonardo DiCaprio, Life Magazine's Year in Pictures, and CD covers for 'Yule Be Swingin', and 'The Swingin'est Sounds Ever Heard'. They were featured dancers in Brian Setzer's 'Jump Jive n' Wail' and Royal Crown Revue's 'Zip Gun Bop' music videos. Their live performances include the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, wrap parties for ER and The Nanny, and the MTV video music awards. They can be seen dancing in Sony-Tristar's 'The Thirteenth Floor'. They have performed on television shows such as 'Beverly Hills, 90210', 'Everybody Loves Raymond', and 'Ally McBeal'. They have been featured in commercials for Sony, Warner Bros., Disney, and the Grammy Awards.

Joel & Alison PLYS (San Diego, USA)

Joel & Alison have taught all over the US (19 states and counting) as well as Australia, Canada, England, France and Sweden. They are very proud to be part of Ryan & Jenny’s new performance group: Swing Un-Ltd. Their emphasis is on quality instruction versus competitive placement, yet they have their share of accomplishments: They have competed and placed at the following events: American Lindy Hop Championships (ALHC – 2003 Fast Dance Champions) National Jitterbug Championships (NJC) North Atlantic Dance Championships (NADC).
(Extract of their site)

Since their marriage and move to San Diego, CA in mid-2002, Joel and Alison Plys have made quite a name for themselves. They have a high quality, energetic approach to the dance which makes every lesson with them a blast! Joel & Alison’s down to earth, enthusiastic attitudes are contagious and offer a very personal learning experience for every student!! They believe that different styles and teaching techniques are essential to the growth of the dances we love!!! Joel & Alison have a full knowledge and understanding of various styles that they share in their instruction. They encourage students to study and be open to “differences” so that they can make the dance their own. They are one of few couples that can truly offer instruction in all areas of authentic Swing: Balboa, Charleston, Collegiate Shag, Lindy and more…

Anne-Hélène & Bernard (Toulouse, France)

Anne-Hélène and Bernard are the founders of La Cave à Swing, an association that is aimed towards promoting Swing dancing in France and the rest of Europe. They are well known for their teaching abilities and for the past three years they have been teaching Swing (Lindy Hop and Balboa) in their own dance studio in Toulouse, called Le Studio Hop. Three years ago, they also formed and began to train their own performance group, Les Tagada Swing Swing. Anne-Helene, previously a Jazz dancer and Bernard, a Jazz and Blues musician, learned their Swing dancing skills from the very best international teachers and they are now well known as teachers on the international dance scene in both Europe and the USA. They are especially noted for clarity in their teaching methods (but always with a bit of humour thrown in !), their emphasis on musicality and connection, their fluid style and the originality of their variations. Passionate about Balboa, they also organise their annual PCBF (Pink City Balboa Festival) in Toulouse.
